About the sport

Roller derby is a full-contact sport played inside a track that all players must stay inside of. There are five people per team, and points are scored as one designated person from each team (the jammer) passes member of the opposing team. As both jammers are trying to score points at the same time, the other members of the team (the blockers) try to simultaneously help their jammer pass members of the opposing team, while stopping the other team’s jammer from passing them.

If you’ve seen the movie “Whip It”, you may have seen that they play on a banked track. The “FT” in WFTDA however stands for “flat track”, so no banks for us. The reason for this is it is much easier to store and set up as we use tape and rope to lay down a track. This makes the sport much easier to be adopted globally as less equipment is needed.

There are still some teams/leagues that use a banked track though!

Once you’ve got your gear, you’re most of the way there. Regular expenses you’ll encounter are:

  • WFTDA insurance (generally $50 annually)
  • League dues ($50/month when actively skating)
  • A small team fee for team expenses (approximately $10, as decided by the team)
  • Some other expenses to consider would be the cost of travel for away games.

If you’re looking for new gear, Roller Girl is a fantastic local shop that stocks everything you’ll need for all levels of derby.

For second-hand/lightly used items check out this new and use gear group on facebook.

Unfortunately we don’t have any programs for kids at the moment! That being said, we’d encourage anyone under 18 and interested in roller derby to check out Vancouver Junior Roller Derby.
